What secrets does a cross hold? Here at the Croix de Saint-Marcel, it holds a tale of resilience. The current cross isn’t the first to grace this spot. The original Croix de Saint-Marcel, a symbol of liberation, was placed here on March 30, 1947. Sadly, vandals destroyed it in 1973. The community rallied, and a new cross was erected on March 18, 1973. Materials were donated by the Gensollen company. Marcel Gallet, a Saint-Marcel native and company employee, crafted the replacement. The Croix de Saint-Marcel stands as a testament to the community’s spirit. It reminds us that even symbols of hope can be fragile, but the spirit they represent can endure. From here, you can enjoy a breathtaking 360-degree view. It stretches from L’Estaque to the Massif de l’Étoile. You can also see the Vélodrome, Bonne Mère, and Frioul. The Croix de Saint-Marcel offers more than just a scenic vista. It offers a glimpse into the heart of a community.
