Doesn’t that view take your breath away? We are standing before a poignant reminder of a life cut short. This is the Croix de Gasquet. It stands on the cliffs of Devenson in the Calanques. This cross is more than just metal. It marks a tragic event.

The Croix de Gasquet is a roadside memorial. In French it is called a croix d’occis. It commemorates someone who died suddenly. This could be from an accident or a crime. Sometimes it marks a natural death in an unexpected place.

Here at the Croix de Gasquet, the story is about a young scoutmaster. His name was Pierre de Gasquet. He belonged to the 21st Marseille scout troop. On October 19 1929, tragedy struck.

Pierre de Gasquet was only 19 years old. He ventured out with two friends. They explored these very cliffs. Pierre decided to climb the Devenson cliff alone. It was a daring choice. Some might even call it reckless.

Sadly Pierre fell to his death. His fellow scouts erected this cross in his memory. The Croix de Gasquet serves as a permanent marker. It reminds us of Pierre’s fateful day. The inscription reads. To the memory of Pierre de Gasquet. Scout Master. 21st Marseille. October 19 1929. Be Prepared.

The phrase être prêt means be prepared in French. It is the scout motto. It is a fitting tribute to a young man. He lived by the scout’s code. He died too young.

This cross is not unique to Marseille. Similar memorials exist elsewhere. In Wallonia they also use the term croix d’occis. Germany calls them Unfallkreuz or Straßenkreuz. These translate to accident cross or road cross. Chile knows them as Animita de carretera. This means little soul of the road.

These memorials share a common purpose. They mark a spot where life ended unexpectedly. They serve as a reminder of our mortality. They urge us to be careful.

Take a moment here at the Croix de Gasquet. Reflect on Pierre’s story. Think about the risks we take. Remember to be prepared. Remember the beauty. Remember the fragility of life.

Look around at the Calanques. See the towering cliffs. Imagine Pierre’s last moments. Feel the wind. Inhale the salty air. The Croix de Gasquet is a stark reminder. Life can change in an instant.

Now as we continue our tour let us carry Pierre’s memory with us. Let the Croix de Gasquet inspire us. Let us appreciate each moment. Let us be prepared for whatever comes.
