Why is this monument, the Croix-autel de Juvisy-sur-Orge, here? That’s a question many have asked, and the answer lies hidden in a story of intrigue and resilience. This Croix-autel wasn’t always here. Built in the 18th century, it originally stood proudly in the village square. We can just imagine the hustle and bustle surrounding it: market days, gatherings, and maybe even a gossiping or two! But in 1824, urban planning necessitated its relocation, quietly shifting the Croix-autel to this very spot. However, its story doesn’t end there! In 1936, disaster struck. Vandals, in an act of senseless destruction, stole the top portion of the cross and tossed it into the nearby Orge River. It seemed lost forever. But just when hope dwindled, fate intervened. During a routine cleaning of the river, a worker stumbled upon the missing piece amidst the mud and debris. A miracle, some proclaimed! The Croix-autel de Juvisy-sur-Orge, once fragmented, was whole again. And so it stands today, a testament to the ebb and flow of time, a silent sentinel witnessing Juvisy-sur-Orge’s ever-changing landscape.
