You might think that Croissy-Beaubourg is just another small town in the suburbs of Paris, but its past is anything but ordinary. Nestled in the Seine-et-Marne department, Croissy-Beaubourg has a rich history dating back centuries.

The village is actually a combination of two former towns, Croissy-en-Brie and Beaubourg. They merged in 1804, forming the Croissy-Beaubourg we know today. Before the merger, Croissy-en-Brie held significance for its medieval castle that stood tall and proud for centuries. This impressive structure was sadly destroyed in 1944 during World War II, leaving behind only remnants of its past grandeur.

The village’s history is a tapestry of noble families and the turbulent times they lived through. The Garlande, Montfort, Meulan, and Longueval families all held sway over Croissy-en-Brie at different points in time. Their stories are woven into the very fabric of the village. The castle even saw its fair share of conflict during the Hundred Years’ War, as it was captured and burned by the Armagnacs.

Beaubourg, on the other hand, had a more peaceful beginning but also had its share of intriguing personalities. Its medieval chapel, built in the 12th century, served as a beacon of faith for the community. The castle of Beaubourg, a fortified manor, was also a place of considerable influence. It passed through the hands of several families, from the Braque to the du Drac and ultimately the Tissart de Rouvres. The latter family had a knack for the dramatic – they even magnetized an ancient tree in the castle park!

Croissy-Beaubourg is a testament to the passage of time, with its rich history and tales of intrigue and change. While the castle may be gone, its legacy lives on, whispered in the breeze that rustles through the trees and etched in the memories of the village.
