Here lies a fascinating window into Roman Britain. This is Crofton Roman Villa in Orpington London. It offers a glimpse into an ancient house and farm complex. This complex dates back to the 2nd century. It was occupied until around 400 AD.

Crofton Roman Villa was at the heart of a 500-acre farming estate. This estate thrived for over 260 years. During this time the villa underwent several alterations. At its peak it boasted at least 20 rooms.

Imagine the bustling activity here. Visualize the people who lived and worked on this estate. They shaped the landscape and contributed to Roman Britain’s story.

Let’s explore the villa’s story. Around 140 AD the villa became the center of the estate. Over the centuries the villa evolved. It grew to include twenty rooms. Some rooms featured floors made of opus signinum. This material consisted of broken tiles mixed with mortar. It was then compacted with a rammer. Other rooms had tiled floors called tessellated floors. You can still see remnants of these floors today.

By the 5th century the villa was abandoned. This likely happened during the Roman retreat from Britain. The site remained hidden for centuries. Then in 1926 workmen stumbled upon Roman artifacts. They were constructing driveways for a council building.

The discovery sparked initial archaeological interest. A full investigation didn’t occur until 1988. The Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit led this extensive excavation. They partnered with Bromley Council. Together they transformed the site. They created the educational center that stands here today.

Today you can explore the partially excavated site. It is protected by a modern structure. Ten of the villa’s rooms are visible. Marvel at the original tiled flooring. Examine the under-floor heating system called a hypocaust.

A touch table invites you to handle real Roman finds. Reconstructed items dot the site. Pottery lamps and jewelry offer a tangible connection to the past. Crofton Roman Villa is London’s only Roman villa open to the public. It allows visitors to explore Roman life. It showcases their architectural innovations.

Bromley Council is starting a refurbishment program in 2024. This will improve the building protecting Crofton Roman Villa.
