This site was once home to older cathedrals dating back to the 7th century. It was in the 12th century that a fascinating chapter unfolded. Legend has it that English King Richard the Lionheart, returning from the Third Crusade, found himself shipwrecked near Lokrum Island. He vowed that if he survived, he would donate generously to the first church he found. That church happened to be the romanesque cathedral on this very spot. While that building met its end with the devastating earthquake of 1667, Richard’s generosity lived on in the city’s memory. The current Crkva Uznesenja Blažene Djevice Marije, rebuilt in the baroque style, stands as a testament to Dubrovnik’s resilience and the echoes of history that resonate through the ages.
