This church, nestled within the heart of Gruž, has a story etched in both tragedy and resilience. Crkva Svetog Križa wasn’t always the structure you see today. Originally built in the 15th century, it was tragically destroyed by Allied bombing in 1943 during World War II. Imagine the devastation, the loss felt by the community. Hundreds of worshippers perished within its walls. The original church, begun by Marino Biscia in 1427, took a decade to construct and was consecrated in 1517. Francesko Albanensi completed the finishing touches in 1594. It served as the southern wall of the Dominican monastery, facing what is now a bustling road. Following the bombing of Crkva Svetog Križa, a temporary chapel within the monastery’s sacristy and refectory became a place of solace, a beacon of hope amidst the ruins. This makeshift sanctuary held the community together until Crkva Svetog Križa could rise again. In 1954, the church was rebuilt from its foundations, a phoenix from the ashes. It stands not only as a place of worship, but also as a symbol of Dubrovnik’s unwavering faith and ability to rebuild, even in the face of unimaginable loss. Crkva Svetog Križa witnessed another historic event. Pope John Paul II celebrated mass in front of the church in Gruž harbor in 2003.
