Slipping through time, let’s journey back to 1427. Dubrovnik citizen Marino Biscia began constructing the Crkva sv. Križa, envisioning a sanctuary of peace. The Crkva sv. Križa wasn’t completed overnight. It took decades, finally being consecrated in 1517. Francesko Albanensi added his touch, completing final work in 1594. The Crkva sv. Križa complex isn’t just the church itself. It also includes a three-aisled structure with a narthex and the Kapelanova Kuća (Chaplain’s House), added in the early 19th century. Imagine ascending the semicircular stone steps, the worn stone smooth beneath your feet. You enter the church, the air cool and quiet. Originally, three arched openings separated the central nave from the side aisles. However, the arches on the east side were later filled in, converting the space into living quarters. The church bears the scars of time. The earthquake of 1979 and the shelling of 1991-1992 left it in ruins. But like a phoenix from the ashes, the Crkva sv. Križa was reborn. Between 2007 and 2009, plans for reconstruction were drawn, and restoration began. The process was meticulous. Damaged sections of the roof and walls were carefully dismantled, preserved, and later reconstructed. Even the painted wooden beams of the roof were restored. This restoration wasn’t merely a rebuilding, but a resurrection of history. The Crkva sv. Križa stands today as a testament to resilience, a beacon of faith rebuilt stone by stone. Its walls whisper tales of devotion, destruction, and renewal.
