Stepping into Ruder Bošković Field, gaze upon Crkva Sv Igracije. A grand staircase, reminiscent of Rome’s Spanish Steps, leads you to this Jesuit masterpiece. Completed in 1725, Crkva Sv Igracije stands as a testament to Roman Baroque architecture. Its single-nave design, based on the Church of St. Ignatius in Rome, was brought to life by the architect Andrea Pozzo. Inside Crkva Sv Igracije, vibrant Baroque frescoes narrate the life of St. Ignatius, painted by the skilled hand of Gaetano Garcia. Balconies and boxes line the sides, while daylight streams through a stained-glass roof, illuminating the artwork. In 1885, a unique addition transformed Crkva Sv Igracije. An artificial grotto, dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes, was created within the church. It stands as one of the oldest such grottos in Europe, its walls adorned with paintings by Jesuit master Antonio Moscheni. The facade of Crkva Sv Igracije embodies High Baroque aesthetics. Free-standing columns frame the ornate portal, adorned with angel sculptures crafted by Marino Groppelli. Adjacent to the church, the Jesuit Collegium completes the ensemble. Built in 1662, and rebuilt between 1669 and 1725 after a devastating earthquake, it once housed classrooms where the renowned scholar Ruder Bošković taught. Today, the Collegium serves as Dubrovnik’s Classical Gymnasium High School, a continuation of its legacy of learning. Look closely at the church belfry. There you will find the oldest bell in Dubrovnik, cast in 1355, a silent witness to centuries of history.
