The wind whips playfully across Crissy Field. It dances with the grasses rustling softly. It carries the scent of salt and distant flowers. This is Crissy Field a place transformed.

Crissy Field wasn’t always this beautiful park. It began as a 130-acre salt marsh a vital area for the Ohlone people. They harvested shellfish and fish here. They built seasonal villages leaving behind shell middens. The Spanish arrived in 1776. They used it for livestock grazing and agriculture. Later the US Army took control. They filled the marshland and created an aerodrome. This was Crissy Field’s military past.

During World War I the Army built temporary buildings. They linked Crissy Field to Fort Mason with a rail spur. The airfield protected San Francisco Bay. Colonel Henry H Arnold played a key role in its development. He named it Crissy Field in honor of Major Dana H Crissy. Major Crissy and his observer died in a plane crash in 1919. Crissy Field became a pivotal airfield in aviation history.

Many significant aviation milestones occurred here. The first successful dawn-to-dusk transcontinental flight ended at Crissy Field in 1924. The Army’s first aerial circumnavigation of the world also stopped here. In 1925 two Navy flying boats attempted the first flight from the continental US to Hawaii. This flight from Crissy Field didn’t quite make it. Later in 1927 Lieutenants Maitland and Hegenberger successfully flew nonstop to Hawaii. They took off from Crissy Field.

However wind fog and the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge made Crissy Field less ideal for air operations. The runway was too short for heavier aircraft. The Army also saw Crissy Field as vulnerable to enemy attacks. Hamilton Field opened in Marin County. Air operations at Crissy Field slowly declined.

After World War II Crissy Field continued as an assembly area. Temporary buildings housed the Military Intelligence Service Language School. Nisei soldiers trained there as battlefield interpreters. The airfield hosted light utility and passenger planes and helicopter operations. It supported MedEvac flights during the Vietnam War. Finally in 1974 the Army closed Crissy Field to airplanes.

In 1994 the National Park Service took over. Crissy Field was a derelict concrete wasteland. The NPS and EPA cleaned up hazardous materials. The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy helped revitalize the area. They opened the Crissy Field Center in 2001. Crissy Field became a beautiful urban park. It hosts a restored tidal marsh. It offers beaches trails and stunning views. It stands as a testament to careful restoration and community collaboration. This is Crissy Field a vibrant reminder of the past. It offers a peaceful place for everyone today.
