What whispers echo from Crèpieux-la-Pape? Once a separate entity, Crèpieux-la-Pape held its own, a commune distinct from its neighbor, Rillieux. Crèpieux-la-Pape emerged from the hamlets of Crèpieu and La Pape. These hamlets originally belonged to the parish of Rillieu. However, discussions and negotiations led to their division between Rillieux and Caluire between 1790 and 1795. Crèpieux-la-Pape became its own commune in 1927, thanks to François Canellas, its first mayor until his death in 1941. This marked a pivotal moment for Crèpieux-la-Pape, giving it a distinct identity and a local government. Located near the Canal de Miribel, Crèpieux-la-Pape had its own train station on the Lyon-Perrache – Geneva line. A key event in the area’s development was the establishment of the ZUP (priority urbanization zone) of Rillieux-Crèpieux in 1958. Spanning 120 hectares across both communes, the ZUP brought significant changes to the landscape and community. In 1967, Crèpieux-la-Pape, along with Rillieux and four other Ain communes, were integrated into the Rhône department. This facilitated their inclusion into the Lyon urban community. The fusion with Rillieux in 1972 brought Crèpieux-la-Pape into the fold of the newly formed Rillieux-la-Pape. Though no longer an independent commune, Crèpieux-la-Pape remains a distinct neighborhood within Rillieux-la-Pape, carrying its unique history and contributing to the rich tapestry of the region. The legacy of Crèpieux-la-Pape endures, a testament to a community’s evolution and its place within the greater narrative of Lyon’s growth. The whispers of its past remind us of its individual journey, now woven into the larger story of Rillieux-la-Pape.
