Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of Crayford Baptist Church is its humble beginning in a renovated stable. This unassuming start speaks volumes about the spirit of the church. The Crayford Baptist Church’s story began in 1810. Four individuals formed its foundation. They were John Row, Anthony Smith, Rebecca Smith and Rachel Hobbs.

John Row became the church’s first pastor. He was formally ordained in 1811. Anthony Smith, a grocer, played a vital role. He donated the quarter-acre plot of land for the church.

Initially, the church met in a renovated stable on the donated land. Soon after, a small chapel was constructed. This chapel was enlarged in 1818 and again in 1830 to accommodate the growing congregation. While the congregation remained small initially, the Sunday School thrived. It became the first in the district, attracting over 100 children by the 1820s. In 1858, a new Sunday School building was erected at a cost of £350. This building now serves as the church hall. It continues to be an important space for church and community events.

The Crayford Baptist Church experienced steady growth until 1847. The Rev C H Hoskins became the pastor. In 1866, the foundation stones were laid for a new building. The new church was formally opened on 26th May 1867. The famous Baptist minister Charles Haddon Spurgeon officiated. He was known as the “Prince of Preachers”. Spurgeon’s text for the occasion was Psalm 102 verse 16.

Spurgeon urged the congregation to help pay off the debt from the building. He contributed £10 himself. He offered an additional £5 for every £100 donated. Amazingly, almost all of the £1,300 cost was raised that day. The church was opened practically free from debt.

The Crayford Baptist Church maintains its strong evangelistic spirit. A statement in the church’s Thanksgiving Service brochure reads. “The Church is for the community and it is for YOU.” The church was renovated and modernized in 2016. The earlier hall still hosts the Sunday School. It is also used during the week for church and community events.

Today, the Crayford Community Fridge is located outside the Hall. This is at the former church entrance. Crayford Baptist Church is part of the London Baptist Association. It is a Christian witness in Crayford since 1810. The building was refurbished internally in 2016. It now offers an attractive worship area. This space can be used in various ways throughout the week.

Crayford Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith and community. Its history is a story of growth, adaptation and unwavering commitment. This Crayford Baptist Church welcomes all who seek fellowship and spiritual guidance.
