Across the River Almond stands Cramond Brig a testament to time. This isn’t just any bridge. Cramond Brig whispers tales of centuries. Its stones have borne witness to history. It’s a marvel of medieval engineering. Part of the bridge dates back to around 1488. That’s when a new stone bridge was built. Imagine the builders. The tools they used. The sheer effort involved.

Cramond Brig wasn’t always so pristine. Around 1587 disaster struck. The two eastern arches collapsed. This happened on the Edinburgh side of the bridge. It wasn’t until 1619 that repairs were finished. The repairs were recorded on the bridge itself. You can still see these markings today. Look carefully at the southern parapet. You’ll find the dates of further repairs in 1687 1761 1776 and 1854. Each repair adds a layer to Cramond Brig’s story. Each stone holds memories.

The bridge boasts three stone arches. The western arch is special. It’s the oldest and the most ornate. It’s heavily decorated. But all three arches share a unique feature. A stepped band crosses each arch then descends. This is unusual. Most arch bridges don’t have this detail. The central arch is also narrower than the others. This is strange too. Normally the central arch is wider. Was this the original design Or was it a result of the 1619 rebuilding? No one knows for certain.

Cramond Brig wasn’t just a passageway. It was a vital link. A pathway connecting communities for centuries. It carried the A90 road. It facilitated trade and travel. Until 1964 that is. That’s when a new bridge was built. The old Cramond Brig now serves as a footbridge. We can walk across it today. A link to the past.

Standing here today we can still appreciate Cramond Brig. We can feel its history. Feel its strength. Imagine the people who have walked this path before us. The stories they carried. Cramond Brig is more than stone and mortar. It’s a legacy. It is a timeless piece of Edinburgh’s history. It deserves our respect and our admiration. Let’s pause a moment and appreciate this remarkable structure.
