The 20th century brought changes. Leipzig Central Station was built from 1902 to 1915. An airport opened in 1911. World War II brought severe air raids in 1943. US troops captured Leipzig in 1945. The city later came under Soviet control. Demonstrations against the East German government took place in 1953.

Prayers for peace at St. Nicolas Church led to Monday Demonstrations in 1989. These events contributed to Germany’s reunification. Leipzig continues to evolve. It celebrates its history.
