Nestled in Xingang Town, Changshu, the CR Power Changshu Power Plant hums with a quiet intensity. This isn’t just any power plant. CR Power Changshu plays a vital role in China’s energy landscape. The plant’s history stretches back to 1993. That’s when the first four units, each capable of generating 330 megawatts of electricity from bituminous coal, began operation. The CR Power Changshu Power Plant didn’t stop there. It expanded. In 2012 and 2013, two more units came online. These massive units, using ultra-supercritical technology, boasted a capacity of 1000 megawatts each. The plant’s total output reached a staggering 3320 megawatts across its six units. Originally owned by CPI (China Power Investment Corporation), CR Power Changshu Power Plant became part of a larger entity in 2015. CPI merged with State Nuclear Power Technology Corporation (SNPTC) forming the State Power Investment Corporation. This made it one of China’s five largest state-owned electricity producers. Expansion plans continued into the 2020s. In response to President Xi’s national energy strategy, three additional 660-megawatt units were approved for construction. These units, also utilizing ultra-supercritical technology, are slated to begin operation around 2027 and 2028. The CR Power Changshu Power Plant stands as a testament to China’s evolving energy needs and its commitment to advanced power generation technologies.
