Did you know that Cox’s Creek once flowed freely carrying logs for Auckland’s bustling industries? Cox’s Creek is more than just a waterway. It’s a historical artery pulsing through the heart of Auckland’s Westmere and Herne Bay. From its humble beginnings as Opoututeka a significant site for Maori iwi this creek played a vital role in shaping Auckland’s development. Its banks provided abundant flax vital for weaving and its waters supported a thriving ecosystem.

The arrival of Europeans marked a dramatic shift for Cox’s Creek. John and Jane Cox established a market garden near the creek in 1841 lending their name to this important waterway. The area boomed. Industries sprung up. Logs floated up Cox’s Creek to be sawn into timber for Auckland’s growing population. A brick factory flourished shipping its products via the creek. Even a soap and candle works and a steam-powered sawmill found their home beside Cox’s Creek.

But progress came at a price. The sawmill operated until 1920 burning down in a blaze that left sawdust and timber smoldering for over a year. Industrial activity polluted Cox’s Creek impacting water quality. The creek’s role shifted. Today it is unsuitable for swimming or fishing due to this historical pollution.

But hope remains. Auckland City Council dredged the creek to restore tidal flow. A massive $1 billion dollar project aims to finally clean the water. This ambitious Watercare Services Limited project hopes to make Cox’s Creek swimmable again by 2030.

Today Cox’s Creek flows beneath the West End Road bridge. Cox’s Bay Reserve a large park with sports fields stands nearby a testament to the creek’s enduring presence. Walk the trails here. Imagine the sounds of industry and the cries of birds. Feel the enduring spirit of this historic waterway. Cox’s Creek is a living story a legacy waiting to be rediscovered. Its future a clean and healthy waterway is a bright promise for Auckland.
