“A hidden entrance awaits,” I say as we approach the Cova Verge. This cave is a secret world. It is nestled between the municipalities of Calvià and Palma. Today we will explore its depths.
The Cova Verge is not easily found. From Son Vida, we follow a forest track. We walk west, parallel to a wall. After about 660 meters, we see a sinkhole. Between the path and the stone wall is the Cova Verda. Just 20 meters away is the Cova Verge.
The approach to Cova Verge takes about 15 minutes. The distance is roughly 680 meters. Keep an eye out. The entrance is tiny. It is almost unnoticeable.
We descend into a doline to reach the lime kiln. On its wall, we find a horizontal opening. It measures 1.5 meters by 0.20 meters wide. The access is awkward. It leads to a single chamber measuring 10 by 9 meters.
The height varies from a mere 0.20 meters to 4 meters. The floor is heavily concreted. It slopes gently downwards for 6 meters, ending in a nearly 3-meter drop.
Look up. You’ll see a great number of roots dangling from the ceiling. They come from the nearby surface. Some roots are too thick to wrap your hand around. The cave features various clastic processes. There are flowstone pavements, a column, and stalactites. Some areas are still active. Spiders also call this cave home.
The Cova Verge offers a unique geological experience. Remember to watch your step. The terrain can be uneven and slippery.
