Slipping through time, we find ourselves at the Cova devora el camí. This cave, whose name translates to “Cave that devours the path”, holds a unique story. The Cova devora el camí sits nestled near Esporlas, specifically within the Bosc de sa Ermita, between the Ermita de Maristela and the Cor de Jesús monument. Imagine the sculptor Bartolomé Amorós crafting this monument, surrounded by the very landscape that hides the Cova devora el camí. The cave isn’t easily stumbled upon. It lies hidden amongst the holm oak trees, near fractures and sinkholes. It was on October 29, 1972, that J. Pons and M. Seguí, members of the Grup Espeleològic Mallorquí (GEM), first mapped the Cova devora el camí. Another group, the O.E.M., also visited, leaving their mark with graffiti in the Sala de s’Estalagmita. The cave’s entrance is a captivating sight. Once inside, a small drop leads you to the main chamber. This chamber branches off to the right, revealing the Sala de s’Estalagmita. Here, fascinating formations decorate the cave walls, including a flowing parietal flowstone and an active stalagmite adorned with tiny gours. Above, the Sala Penjada, a smaller chamber measuring 6 x 6 x 2 meters, also boasts beautiful formations. The Cova devora el camí ends in the southeast, where a narrow crack halts further exploration. The cave owes its name to its position next to what was once an old path, now abandoned and reclaimed by nature. The Cova devora el camí truly offers a glimpse into Mallorca’s hidden wonders.
