“Imagine being among the first explorers”. What mysteries did they uncover within the Cova des Coll des Vent? Today we explore this fascinating cave. It is located near Coll des Vent. The entrance sits just a few meters from the path. You will find it past an old lime kiln.
Despite its modest size, the Cova des Coll des Vent has a certain complexity. This is typical for caves in the Serra de Na Burguesa. Let’s venture into the Sala d’Entrada. This main chamber stretches southeast to northwest. It slopes gently downwards into the deeper parts.
The true size of the Sala d’Entrada remains hidden. Rocks obstruct views of its potential extensions. But look to the south. You’ll see beautiful flowstones adorned with small gours. Above, notice the dolomitic fissures in the ceiling. In the southwest corner near the flowstones, two openings beckon. The left one is easier to access.
To reach the Sala Baixa or Low Chamber, we must crawl through that opening. Once inside you will understand the name. Like the Sala d’Entrada this chamber runs south to north. It is heavily covered in concretions. The cave continues southwest to northeast. Soon we will arrive at three columns. These stand nearly aligned. We will descend to a lower level. Then we pass through a narrow passage. This leads to a nearly vertical fracture.
This is S’Escletxa. It follows the same orientation as the Sala de’Entrada. But it leans further west. It is narrow. It is only about four meters wide and thirteen meters long. To begin our descent use a rope. Attach it to a thick stalagmite. Before reaching the bottom, there is a platform. This is formed by accumulated blocks.
Having safely landed we find ourselves near the Sala de sa Colada. If we head southwest, we’ll approach a balcony. From here we can see the end of the fracture. It is about five meters below. But let’s go northeast. We’ll find the Sala de ses Colades. This is a small chamber only five meters wide. A beautiful flowstone cascades down it. Looking at the flowstone head on you will see a small chamber. It hangs on the left side. It is a little over a meter high. Another chamber sits at the far end. It requires some digging to enter. So far, no one has cleared it out.
The Cova des Coll des Vent offers a glimpse into the geological wonders beneath our feet. The cave is a testament to the slow relentless work of water and time. Remember this hidden world. It is as fragile as it is beautiful. Let us leave it undisturbed for future explorers.
