Seven brothers set out from Toulouse. Their destination was Paris and their mission to preach. They would establish a community and study. This marked the beginning of the Couvent Saint-Jacques.
In 1217, Saint Dominique sent this small group to Paris. Less than a year later, they took possession of a hospice. It also included a small chapel. This place once welcomed pilgrims traveling to Saint-Jacques de Compostelle. A master of Paris donated these buildings. They were at the end of the Rue Saint-Benoit. It has since been called Rue Saint-Jacques.
Over the centuries, the brothers moved many times. They faced expulsion and dispersion. Yet, they never dissolved their community. The religious men stayed in touch with their prior. They tried to meet regularly. Every three years, they continued to elect their leader.
Finally, in 1930, they regrouped on Rue Vanneau. Later, they moved to Rue de la Glacière. The Couvent Saint-Jacques garden overlooked a neighborhood chapel. It was called Notre-Dame des Anges. Public access was through Rue des Tanneries. This street runs parallel to Rue de la Glacière.
In 1968, the community moved one last time. They settled into a new building. It was built on the site of Notre-Dame des Anges. Some neighboring houses were also included. Architect Joseph Belmont designed this complex. It included both the Couvent Saint-Jacques and the Saulchoir.
Later, in 1993, Le Jour du Seigneur replaced Couvent Maydieu. In 2002, the Commission Léonine arrived. Then, in 2013, the Editions du Cerf moved to Rue des Tanneries. The Maison Provinciale followed shortly after in 2014.
Today, 25 preaching brothers live at the Couvent Saint-Jacques. Meeting rooms and a student hall occupy the second floor. The Couvent Saint-Jacques is a symbol of the Dominican order. Its history is eventful.
The Couvent Saint-Jacques welcomes everyone. Lauds are at 7:30 AM on weekdays and 8:30 AM on Sundays. Vespers take place at 7:30 PM. Mass is celebrated at 8:00 AM and 12:00 PM on weekdays. Sunday Mass is at 11:00 AM. The Couvent Saint-Jacques also hosts conventual meetings. Various events are held regularly.
The story of the Couvent Saint-Jacques is one of faith. It shows perseverance and community. Even through many challenges, the brothers maintained their mission. This place remains a center for prayer. It is also a place for study and fellowship in Paris.
