“This couple looks so peaceful, don’t they?” the guide’s voice cut through the gentle hum of the park.
You might think this is just another sculpture in a park full of artistic treasures, but the Couple sculpture in Fontvieille Park holds a special charm. Created by the renowned English sculptor Lynn Russell Chadwick, it’s a testament to the power of simple forms and evocative poses.
Chadwick, known for his abstract, often angular figures, seemed to capture a sense of quiet intimacy in this piece. The Sitting Couple, as it’s formally known, isn’t just a sculpture but a snapshot of a moment frozen in time. Interestingly, Chadwick gifted a similar sculpture, also titled “The Sitting Couple,” to The Hague in the Netherlands. Although bearing the same name, the two sculptures portray the couple in slightly different positions, offering a subtle exploration of human connection across different contexts.
