Ever wondered about the silent giant guarding Auckland’s water supply? Cosseys Creek Dam isn’t just a dam. It’s a marvel of engineering a testament to human ingenuity. Nestled in the Hunua Ranges this dam is a key player in Auckland’s water story.

Completed in 1955 Cosseys Creek Dam holds a special place in New Zealand’s history of dam construction. It was the first of its kind a rolled earth dam. This innovative design was a significant leap forward. The dam’s construction used materials readily available nearby. The clays and rubble came from the greywacke-argillite rock. This reduced transport costs and time. Modern machinery like Euclid T24 earthmovers sped up the process. 411000 cubic meters of material were moved in just 190 days across three seasons.

Cosseys Creek Dam’s reservoir is impressive. It holds 14460000 cubic meters of water. This provides a safe yield of 40800 cubic meters daily for Auckland. The dam itself is quite large. Its crest length stretches 168 meters. It stands tall at 412 meters above its foundation. The reservoir area covers 119 hectares. The dam’s impact extends beyond its impressive size. It significantly advanced rolled earth dam design. This design proved effective and efficient for water resource management in the region.

Interestingly during construction the stream was diverted through a long tunnel. This tunnel is now sealed. It’s a hidden part of the dam’s story. The dam’s spillway capacity is 15000 cusecs. This ensures it can handle heavy rainfall. The filling of the reservoir started in May 1955. It concluded in July 1956 after some very heavy rains.

Today you can see the dam and its reservoir from the Cosseys-Massey Loop walk. It’s a chance to appreciate this remarkable piece of engineering. Cosseys Creek Dam isn’t just a source of water. It’s a symbol of Auckland’s ingenuity. It’s a silent guardian working tirelessly. It ensures the city’s water needs are met. It’s a story of innovation and resourcefulness written in earth and water.
