Cosmopolitan United Church

In June 1972, two churches united to form Cosmopolitan United Church. This wasn’t your typical merger. It was the birth of something new, something cosmopolitan. The United Church of the Medical Center (UCMC), located on Ashland Avenue in Chicago, merged with another congregation. This union brought together the former St. Paul United Methodist Church and the Third Presbyterian Church, creating a vibrant interdenominational community. Cosmopolitan United Church’s history is one of resilience and transformation. Initially, the church resided in the bustling Medical Center area. It served as a vital meeting place for diverse groups. International communities, medical professionals, and denominational gatherings all found a home within its walls. The church’s location and commitment allowed it to address the concerns of this diverse community. It tackled issues affecting the metropolitan area and even engaged with global religious and justice issues. The church faced a significant challenge in the 1980s. Rush St. Luke Presbyterian Hospital made an unsolicited offer to buy the church’s property. This sparked a David-and-Goliath legal battle that lasted for a decade. With the support of the Northern Illinois Conference and the General Council on Finance Administration, Cosmopolitan United Church persevered. In 1994, the legal battle ended amicably, and Rush St. Luke purchased the property. Cosmopolitan United Church used the proceeds to purchase a new home in Melrose Park. This building, formerly owned by First Presbyterian Church, became the new sanctuary for this evolving congregation. The move marked a new chapter. UCMC officially became Cosmopolitan United Church, reflecting its diverse and inclusive nature. This new name signified a subtle shift in mission. While still providing pastoral care, worship, and education, the church broadened its focus. Cosmopolitan United Church became “an international community of faith in Metro Chicago serving as a gateway to new life.” The church continued to evolve. In 2023, after much study and discussion, the congregation voted unanimously to become an open and affirming congregation. They joined the Reconciling Ministries Network, demonstrating their commitment to LGBTQIA+ justice. Cosmopolitan United Church stands as a testament to the power of unity, resilience, and inclusion. It welcomes people of all nationalities and denominations. It’s a place where faith, justice, and love intertwine, creating a truly cosmopolitan community.
