“Remember the fallen” whispers the aged stone of the Cosmopolitan Church. Here we stand before a building that has witnessed the tumultuous history of Manila.

The Cosmopolitan Church isn’t just a church. It’s a survivor. Its story begins in the 1930s. Sixty members of the Central Methodist Church bravely left. They sought independence from the American Methodist Episcopal Church. Rev Cipriano Navarro Dr Melquiades Gamboa and Rev Samuel Stagg led this exodus. They established the Philippine Methodist Episcopal Church. This ultimately led to the birth of the Cosmopolitan Student Church.

The church building constructed in 1936 became more than just a place of worship. During World War II it served as a secret base for guerilla fighters resisting the Japanese occupation. Imagine the hushed prayers the clandestine meetings. The building stood strong until 1944 when the Japanese seized it. It was later destroyed by fire during the Battle of Manila. Yet from the ashes it rose again in 1945. A testament to faith resilience and the unwavering spirit of its congregation.

In 1948 the Cosmopolitan Church joined the United Church of Christ in the Philippines. This union marked a significant moment in its journey. It became part of a larger movement. It solidified its commitment to the Christian faith.

The Cosmopolitan Church is more than bricks and mortar. During the Marcos dictatorship under Martial Law Pastor Cirilo A Rigos and Senator Jovito Salonga established the Paglingap Ministry. This ministry helped free over ninety political prisoners. They also provided vital support to their families. The church offered refuge hope and a beacon of freedom during a dark period.

Today the Cosmopolitan Church stands tall a four-story building known as Rigos Hall. This is named after Pastor Cirilio A Rigos. Inside the Mary Boyd Stagg Memorial Sanctuary stained glass windows add a serene glow. These were installed in 1999 commemorating the church’s 66th anniversary. The Angela Valdez Ramos Memorial Chapel and Founder’s Garden are further testaments to the enduring legacy of this remarkable church. The Cosmopolitan Church is not just a place of worship. It is a living monument to faith courage and the indomitable human spirit. A place where history echoes and hope endures.
