Beneath the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue lies Cosme Velho. It’s a neighborhood steeped in history and nestled at the foot of Corcovado Mountain. Cosme Velho is more than just a picturesque suburb. It’s a living testament to Rio de Janeiro’s rich past. The name itself whispers tales of a bygone era. It honors Cosme Velho Pereira, a Portuguese merchant from the 16th century. He lived in the highest part of the Carioca River valley. His estate became the heart of what we know today as Cosme Velho.

Cosme Velho began its life on the banks of the Carioca River. As early as 1567, the land was granted to the Monteiro family. They cultivated the area. They built homes and even a windmill. The river itself played a crucial role. It was the main source of fresh water for Rio de Janeiro. In the 17th century, the city began drawing water from the river. Later, an aqueduct was built to carry water to Lapa in the city center. Remnants of this aqueduct still stand as the Arcos da Lapa.

During the Brazilian Empire, slaves known as “agüeiros” carried water from the Carioca River to their masters. They collected water from a high point in the valley, an area then known as “Águas Férreas” or Iron Waters. This name stuck for a long time. Even in the first half of the 20th century, trams and buses listed “Águas Férreas” as their destination. The river played a significant role. The area’s pleasant temperatures made it a favorite retreat for 19th-century Cariocas.

Cosme Velho boasts the historic Corcovado Railway Station. This station, opened during the Empire, is the starting point for the train to Christ the Redeemer. This statue is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Cosme Velho has been home to many notable figures. Machado de Assis, known as the “Wizard of Cosme Velho,” lived here. Although his house is no longer standing, his legacy remains. Other notable residents include Manuel Bandeira, Euclides da Cunha, Cecilia Meireles, and Jorge Mautner, creating a vibrant cultural hub. The neighborhood houses the International Museum of Naïve Art of Brazil. Its collection includes over 6,000 naïve paintings. Cosme Velho also preserves historic buildings like the Solar dos Abacaxis, a neoclassical mansion from the mid-19th century. The Largo do Boticário is another gem. This charming square features seven neocolonial houses built with materials salvaged from demolished buildings in the city center. Here, you can see the open-air Carioca River and the lush Atlantic Forest vegetation.
