Mahmud Pasha’s legacy whispers from the stones of Coşkun Han. This isn’t just any building. This is Istanbul’s oldest surviving caravanserai.

Built in 1467 it stands as a testament to Mahmud Pasha’s vision. He was Grand Vizier to Mehmet II the Conqueror. Coşkun Han formed part of a larger religious and charitable complex a külliye. The magnificent Mahmut Pasha Mosque completed in 1464 is its centerpiece. The complex included a bathhouse the Mahmut Pasha Hamam.

Coşkun Han was more than just a resting place for travelers. Imagine bustling life within its walls. Merchants bartered. Artisans crafted their wares. The sounds of hammers and the scent of spices filled the air.

The han’s design is classic Ottoman. Two courtyards existed. The southern one remains mostly intact. The northern courtyard sadly less so. A modern mosque now sits in the south courtyard. Originally a fountain and a small mosque mescit were there.

Around the courtyards were two stories of arched galleries. They led to many rooms about 150 or maybe 167 depending on who you ask. Shops and offices occupied these rooms. They generated income for the mosque’s waqf foundation.

Today Coşkun Han continues its lively existence. Shops and businesses thrive within its ancient walls. It’s a reminder of Istanbul’s rich history. It shows the enduring spirit of a city that seamlessly blends the past with the present. It’s a living monument a vibrant part of the city’s fabric. You are standing where history unfolds. You stand in Coşkun Han. Feel its pulse.
