September 1st, 1984 marked the birth of Corpus Christi Catholic Parish. Initially, the parish didn’t have its own building. Services were held at the Bonita Golf Club on Sweetwater Road. They also rented space from Good Shepard Episcopal Church from 1984 to 1988. Corpus Christi Catholic Parish quickly grew from less than 200 families to 800 families by 1989. Imagine the vibrant energy of this growing community. They finally moved into a former hardware store next to the Bonita Post Office in the Bonnie Brae Shopping Center. Parishioners fondly nicknamed this space “Holy Hardware”. By 1986, Corpus Christi Catholic Parish had purchased land in Bonita Long Canyon. This land, at the corner of Corral Canyon Road and Country Vistas Lane, was destined to become their permanent home. Reverend John G. Proctor, Jr. became pastor in 1986 and led the groundbreaking ceremony on September 10, 1989. On Christmas Eve 1990, the first mass was held in the newly built church. Deacon Jim Hitch joined the parish in 1992. Years later, in 2009, Corpus Christi Catholic Parish celebrated its 25th anniversary. This also marked the groundbreaking for a new Parish Hall. Bishop Robert H. Brom of San Diego led a special mass. The new Parish Hall was dedicated by Bishop Brom on June 25, 2011. This marked a significant milestone in the parish’s history. In September 2011, the parish opened a preschool in its former CCD classrooms. Leanna Zarzar Prelle served as the founding director.
