Established in 1807, Corps Lusatia Leipzig has a rich and intriguing history. Right here on Karl-Heine-Straße, this student fraternity, Sachsens’ oldest, has witnessed over two centuries of Leipzig’s transformation. Corps Lusatia Leipzig was founded by students hailing from Lusatia, a region spanning parts of Germany and Poland. Their original colors were blue-red-gold, later changed to the current steel-blue-gold-red in 1832. Their motto, “Libertas vita carior!”, translates to “Liberty is dearer than life!”. Corps Lusatia Leipzig played a key role in the formation of the Kösener Senioren-Convents-Verband (KSCV), a national fraternity association, in 1848. They were even involved in the establishment of the university’s first student committee in 1911. The Corps faced suppression under Nazi rule, being banned in 1934. They cleverly continued their traditions in secret under the guise of the “Kameradschaft Markgraf von Meißen”. During World War II, members continued their activities, even holding secret fencing matches. After the war, unable to operate under communist rule, Corps Lusatia Leipzig temporarily relocated to Erlangen and later West Berlin. Remarkably, they successfully sued the Free University of Berlin for recognition as a student organization in 1968. Following German reunification, Corps Lusatia Leipzig returned to Leipzig in 1990. Today, Corps Lusatia Leipzig continues to thrive in its restored home on Karl-Heine-Straße, carrying on a legacy that spans centuries. They preserve the traditions of Corps Lusatia Breslau, adding another layer to their vibrant history.
