Deep within the Pedregal de San Ángel Ecological Reserve, stands the Corona del Pedregal. It’s more than just a sculpture. It’s a conversation between art and nature. The Corona del Pedregal, also known as the “Crown of the Pedregal,” rises from the volcanic rock. It was created by Mathias Goeritz in 1980. The Espacio Escultórico, where the Corona resides, is a giant ring of triangular prisms. This ring encircles a frozen lava sea, a testament to the Xitle volcano’s eruption. The Corona del Pedregal itself consists of five tall, slender, pink pentagonal pyramids. These striking forms pierce the sky, contrasting sharply with the dark volcanic landscape. Goeritz envisioned the Corona as a crown for this unique environment, a symbol of its resilience and beauty. The sculpture is part of a larger project. Six prominent Mexican sculptors collaborated to create the Espacio Escultórico. They sought to harmonize geometric sculpture with the natural world. Their vision was to create a sanctuary within the ecological reserve. A place where visitors could contemplate their place within the vastness of nature.
