It is said that in 1824, explorers Hamilton Hume and William Hovell met the Wathaurong people who lived by Corio Bay. They were told that the bay was called “Jillong” (meaning “a place of the seabird over the white cliffs”) and that it was surrounded by the land called “Corayo”. It’s a bit of a linguistic twist, because when the area was officially surveyed decades later, the name “Geelong” had become associated with the land and “Corio” with the bay instead. Now we stand right here by the water’s edge, looking out at the bay that is a huge part of Geelong’s history and culture. For hundreds of years, this bay has been a meeting place for Indigenous peoples, a source of food and a vibrant part of the landscape. This area was originally home to the Wathaurong people. They lived in connection with this bay, harvesting fish and seafood from its waters and using it for transport. Corio Bay has been a vital source of life and sustenance for generations. It is important to remember that this land continues to hold significance for the Wathaurong people of the area. Today, thousands of people and their boats make their way out of this bay. It’s a busy place, but as you look towards the horizon it’s easy to imagine the peaceful, natural world which the Wathaurong people cherished for so long. Look carefully at the water’s edge. You can still see the remnants of the past: The ancient shell middens are evidence of their lives, a reminder of the connection between people and nature. Today, Corio Bay is part of Geelong’s identity. A place of history, industry, and recreation. For the Wathaurong people, this bay is a reminder of their heritage and a source of vibrant life. For us, it’s a window into the past, a place of beauty, and a haven for recreational activity.
