“A beacon of faith in the heart of Chicago.” That’s how many describe Corinth Baptist Church. Corinth Baptist Church stands proudly on North Rockwell Street. It has witnessed the ebb and flow of life in the city for over a century. Let’s journey back to 1969. A congregation from another Corinth Baptist Church, led by Reverend Denzel Alexander, arrived in Chicago. They found a vacant “Steeple Church,” built in 1907. Its steeple soared 107 feet, a prominent landmark in the old village. They remodeled the church and made it their own. However, their stay was brief. They moved back to the city in 1971, leaving the grand old church empty once more. That same year, Tabernacle Baptist Church of Bensenville was searching for a new home. Instead of building, their pastor, Reverend Robert Bragg, led them to the Itasca Baptist Church in Itasca. The church, built in 1907 by Fred Westendorf, was located at 210 S. Walnut, Itasca. The Tabernacle Baptist Church congregation decided to keep the name Itasca Baptist Church. The original members of Tabernacle Baptist Church included families like the Buchheits, Bakers, Bowmans, and others. Their names are etched in the church’s history, a testament to their faith and dedication. So, while our focus is on Corinth Baptist Church on North Rockwell Street, its story is intertwined with these other congregations and their journeys. It reminds us that faith communities are dynamic, evolving, and always seeking a place to call home.
