Picture this. You are standing at the edge of Western Port Bay in Corinella. The salty air fills your lungs. The sun glints off the water. Before you lies Corinella a town steeped in history adventure and a touch of mystery.

Corinella is more than just a pretty coastal town. It’s a place where history whispers from the wind. A place where the past comes alive. It’s a holiday destination known for its recreational fishing and its stunning views of French Island. A privately operated barge even connects Corinella to French Island adding a unique touch to its character.

Now imagine 1826. The air is thick with tension. Fear of French territorial claims grips the fledgling colony of New South Wales. A small military settlement Fort Dumaresq was hastily established on Phillip Island. But lack of fresh water forced its relocation to Corinella. Then called Settlement Point this little outpost became a critical point in Australia’s early history. Soldiers convicts and William Hovell himself toiled under Captain Wright’s command. Their efforts to preempt any French move were short-lived. Hovell’s reports deemed Western Port unsuitable for agriculture. The settlement was abandoned in 1828. Buildings were torched to prevent their use by escaped convicts.

A memorial cairn stands today in Jamieson Street marking this forgotten chapter. It serves as a stark reminder of Australia’s colonial beginnings. At the end of Smythe Street another monument commemorates the exploration of Paul Edmund de Strzelecki in 1840. His expedition endured hardship. A local Aborigine Charlie Tara guided them through the bush providing vital food.

Archaeological digs in the late 1970s further unearthed this intriguing history. The Victoria Archaeological Survey led by Peter Coutts uncovered evidence of the 1826 settlement. This confirmed the site’s importance in shaping Victoria’s colonial past. Later in 1851 Corinella was officially proclaimed as a township.

Today Corinella offers a different kind of adventure. A relaxed charm surrounds its jetty boat ramp and general store. The Harold Hughes Reserve a beautiful park sits in the town centre. You can see tennis courts a skate park and even a playground. The coastal reserve protects the coastline with its stunning views. Mangroves geological formations and sites of cultural heritage are all part of this rich landscape. A history trail guides visitors to significant sites. Storyboards detail the rich history allowing one to truly understand Corinella’s past.

As you leave Corinella take a moment to reflect. This quiet town holds within it tales of early exploration military strategy and survival against the odds. It is a place of contrasts. A place where the echoes of the past meet the tranquility of the present. Corinella. A place where history lives on.
