A traitor’s legacy etched in stone. Here stands a stark reminder of a dark chapter in Danish history. This is the Corfitz Ulfeldts Skamstøtte. It is a monument of shame.

Corfitz Ulfeldt was no ordinary man. He was a statesman. He was married to Leonora Christina. She was the daughter of King Christian IV. Ulfeldt rose to power. He became Steward of the Realm.

But ambition consumed him. Ulfeldt betrayed Denmark. He collaborated with Sweden during the Dano-Swedish War. His actions earned him the label of traitor.

In 1663, Ulfeldt was found guilty of treason. He was beheaded in effigy. All his property was confiscated. His mansion was torn down. A Skamstøtte, a shame stone, was erected in its place.

The inscription read: “The traitor: Corfitz WF (Ulfeldt): To eternal scorn: Shame and disgrace”. This stone was a symbol of Ulfeldt’s betrayal. It was a public declaration of his infamy.

The original Skamstøtte was destroyed in the great fire of 1728. It was later renovated. But by 1841, the hatred for Ulfeldt had diminished. The shame stone was removed. The square was renamed Gråbrødretorv.

Today, the original stone resides in the National Museum of Denmark. Here on Gråbrødretorv, you’ll find a granite memorial stone. It was erected in 1977. It bears Ulfeldt’s initials and the years 1664-1842.

Ulfeldt’s story is a cautionary tale. It shows the consequences of ambition and betrayal. His name is synonymous with treachery in Danish history.

His wife Leonora Christina suffered greatly. She was imprisoned for many years after his death. Her memoirs offer a glimpse into her difficult life. She was trapped in the royal dungeon. It was called Blåtårn.

The Corfitz Ulfeldts Skamstøtte serves as a reminder. It is a stark reminder of the past. It prompts us to reflect on loyalty and betrayal. The stone stands as a testament to the enduring power of history. It is a symbol that even in disgrace, a legacy remains.
