Whose land are we standing on, here in Cordovil? A nobleman’s, it turns out. In the 17th century, this entire area belonged to Bartolomeu de Siqueira Cordovil, a Portuguese nobleman, a provedor, or financial officer of the Royal Treasury. Cordovil’s sprawling lands in what would become the Zona Norte of Rio de Janeiro stretched extensively. His namesake, Cordovil, meaning “Cordoba leather”, hints at the family’s possible involvement in the leather trade. His son, Francisco Cordovil, later inherited these lands, known as the “Engenho do Provedor.” This vast estate included not only extensive sugarcane fields spreading towards Iraju00e1 but also a small beach where the residents could enjoy the waters of Guanabara Bay. The Church of Nossa Senhora da Apresentau00e7u00e3o, one of Rio’s oldest, stands as a testament to the family’s legacy. In 1902, after centuries under the Cordovil family, the land was sold to the Visconde de Moraes. The transformation began. The Visconde subdivided and sold off plots, transforming Cordovil into what we see today. The neighborhood’s official birthdate, October 5, 1910, isn’t about its founding fathers or sugarcane. It marks the inauguration of Cordovil’s railway station. This station, a pivotal moment in the area’s history, connected the then-rural outskirts to the heart of Rio. Imagine the impact, the sudden influx of people and ideas, the shift from quiet farmland to a bustling suburb. Today, Cordovil is a unique neighborhood. It’s the only one in Rio with its own official flag. A vibrant symbol of community pride, this flag features the 700-year-old Cordovil family crest against a backdrop of railway tracks, a tribute to the neighborhood’s connectedness.
