Wow what a transformation Corcoran Park has undergone. This wasn’t always a vibrant green space.

Corcoran Park in South Minneapolis is a beloved neighborhood park. It boasts family-friendly amenities. There’s a recreation center a wading pool a playground and sports fields and courts. You’ll also find restrooms and a drinking fountain. But its story is richer than just swings and slides.

Before it was a park this land held Corcoran School. The school was named for William Wilson Corcoran. He was a banker philanthropist and art collector. He founded the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington DC. The city acquired the land from the school board in 1976 for a cool $95500. It was one of three former school sites the park board snapped up in the mid-1970s. The area desperately needed more recreation facilities. This was formally recognized in 1944. The final pieces of land were acquired in 1977 through condemnation. Development started that same year. A recreation shelter playgrounds tennis courts and even horseshoe pits were added. The park was finished and opened in 1979.

The park wasn’t without its challenges. A fire ravaged the recreation center in 1998. However it was remarkably rebuilt in just three months. Further improvements followed in 2000. A new tot lot was added. Volleyball courts replaced the underused horseshoe pits. In 2001 Corcoran became one of the first five recreation centers with a computer lab. Even the recreation center’s thermostat got an upgrade in 2009 transitioning to internet-based controls.

Today Corcoran Park thrives. It’s a testament to community vision perseverance and the transformative power of a well-loved green space. So take a moment breathe in the fresh air and appreciate the history woven into this lively Minneapolis gem. Remember this small piece of history the next time you see children laughing on the playground or families enjoying a picnic.
