Imagine stepping into a building that once housed a workhouse for the poor. This is Coombes Croft Library, a place steeped in history that has transformed from a symbol of hardship to a beacon of learning and community. Coombes Croft was originally part of a larger estate owned by a family named Coombe. After the estate was passed down through generations, it eventually became part of a charitable trust for the poor. During the 18th century, the estate was used to build a workhouse. Now, it’s hard to imagine that this charming library once housed a harsh reality for the less fortunate. But this is just the tip of the iceberg. The library has a fascinating history, reaching back as far as the 15th century. The original Coombe family’s house stood on the south side of Marsh Lane, now called Park Lane. After the Coombe family’s passing, the land, known as Coombes Croft, was inherited by various wealthy individuals. During the 17th century, it was used to support the poor and, like many other estates with this mission, was deemed a workhouse. It was almost a century later that the library was opened. In 1925, Coombes Croft Library opened its doors to the public. The workhouse was demolished to make way for Bromley Road, and only a portion of the original house was refurbished to form the library. It’s a testament to how communities evolve, and how a building can shed past hardships to become a place for growth and empowerment. Today, bustling with activity, Coombes Croft Library provides a wide range of services, from children’s events to film showings. It’s a cultural hub that serves the community, a haven for readers, a place of learning, and a symbol of hope.
