Imagine King Afonso Henriques positioning his troops here in 1147. This very spot where we stand is Largo da Graça. From here he successfully sieged Lisbon Castle. This marked a pivotal moment in Portuguese history. We are now standing in front of Convento da Graça one of Lisbon’s oldest monasteries.

Convento da Graça’s story begins in the 13th century. The Order of the Augustinians established it. Initially, it was intended for 50 monks. In 1305 its name changed. It was then rededicated to Nossa Senhora da Graça.

Afonso de Albuquerque played a significant role. Before his first voyage to India he established a chapel in the church. His father and great-grandfather were buried here. Albuquerque himself was buried in the chancel in 1566.

The church and monastery faced destruction. The devastating 1755 Lisbon earthquake caused considerable damage. It was rebuilt in the 16th century. Later it was restored in Baroque style. Only a single bell tower was added. The Manueline baptistry and Capela dos Almadas survived. They predate the earthquake.

Look at the double façade. Notice how it is set at an angle. It comprises the church and the old monastery entrance. Manuel da Costa Negreiros designed the bell tower. He completed it in 1738.

After 1834 the convent’s purpose shifted. Monasteries and religious orders dissolved. The convent became a barracks for Portuguese military units.

Step inside the church. Admire the azulejo tile panels. They span from the 16th to 19th centuries. Observe the ornate gilded woodwork. Several ornate side chapels add to the interior’s beauty. Pedro Alexandrino de Carvalho painted the allegorical ceiling. His work is visible in other Lisbon landmarks.

Convento da Graça is known for a significant religious event. The Procession of Senhor dos Passos da Graça occurs annually. It is one of Lisbon’s oldest and most important processions. Since 1587 it has taken place without interruption. The procession occurs on the second Sunday of Lent. It traces Jesus’ journey along the Via Dolorosa. The route runs between the Church of São Roque and Convento da Graça.

In 2023 the bell tower opened to the public as a viewing platform. The rooftop terrace is now accessible. It offers stunning views of Lisbon and the Tagus River.

Take a moment to appreciate the location. From Largo da Graça enjoy views over Barrio Alto and Chiado. Convento da Graça stands as a testament to Lisbon’s rich history and enduring beauty. It has witnessed sieges earthquakes and transformations. Today it remains a cherished landmark.
