This unassuming plaque speaks volumes. It marks the Construction de la galerie de la Mer 1890-1905 a monumental undertaking. The Construction de la galerie de la Mer wasn’t just about digging a tunnel. It was a feat of engineering a testament to human ingenuity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The story of the Construction de la galerie de la Mer began much earlier than this plaque suggests. In 1859 engineer Ernest Biver envisioned a solution to a persistent problem. Water flooded the mines of the Bouches-du-Rhone area. His plan A massive drainage gallery. This would channel the water away from the mines. The gallery construction wouldn’t be completed until 1907 a long 18 years later.

The Construction de la galerie de la Mer was initially meant to alleviate flooding. It became much more. The gallery which stretched nearly 15 kilometers connected the Biver mine shaft near Mimet to the Mediterranean Sea near Marseille. It did so via a 550 millimeter diameter pipe. This ingenious system not only drained water. It also served briefly as a railway line for transporting coal and mine waste. This significantly reduced costs for the mining company. It avoided the need for expensive pumping systems.

Construction was arduous. The straight-line route presented significant challenges. Two ventilation shafts aided the process. These were the Puits Saint Joseph and the Puits de la Mure. The construction was deemed a monumental engineering task unprecedented in the region. This is because of its length and the difficulties in constructing it.

Even after the mines closed in 2003 the Construction de la galerie de la Mer remained crucial. It continued to drain water from the mines. This prevented flooding in nearby urban areas. The BRGM French Geological Survey took over its maintenance in 2007. In 2010 pumping capacity increased significantly to handle the outflow of iron oxides. This work will continue until roughly 2030.

Today the Construction de la galerie de la Mer has a new purpose. It plays a vital role in cooling data centers. The water at a constant 15.5 degrees Celsius is pumped out at a rate up to 1800 cubic meters per hour. This innovative use highlights the enduring legacy of this remarkable engineering feat. The Construction de la galerie de la Mer a testament to human innovation and resilience. It lives on in this plaque. It reminds us of the ingenuity and persistence that shaped this region.
