Grind. The sound of wheels against concrete echoes. This is Conne Island Skatepark in Leipzig. Right here you stand at a legendary spot.

Conne Island Skatepark isn’t just a place to skate. It’s an extension of Conne Island a music venue and self-managed social center. It’s a hub for the radical left a place with a rich history.

The building itself predates the skatepark. It was built in the second half of the 19th century. Initially it was a restaurant called Eiskeller the Ice Pit. Can you imagine? A restaurant where this vibrant skatepark now stands? During the Nazi era it became a Hitler Jugend center. After the war it functioned as a FDJ youth club under the name Klubhaus Erich Zeigner. Even though the Eiskeller name is largely forgotten it persists as a local nickname. This building has witnessed significant shifts in German history.

Conne Island the venue and the skatepark outside became a symbol. A stronghold for the radical left. It hosts hardcore punk gigs and even hip hop electronic music and heavy metal. Mayhem a black metal band even recorded a live performance here in 1990. That recording Live in Leipzig was released years later in 1993.

In the 2010s Conne Island gained a different sort of notoriety. It became known as an Anti-German project. Palestininan keffiyehs were temporarily confiscated then returned with a note. It’s a fascinating example of political activism blending with cultural space. The venue celebrated 20 years of existence in 2011. It faced controversies in 2016 involving a self-proclaimed Islam hater speaking there. Also there were reports of sexual harassment at some club nights.

The COVID-19 pandemic threatened to close Conne Island. But a German-American record label stepped in. Unity Worldwide Records released a benefit compilation. Strength Thru Unity A Conne Island Benefit Compilation was released to help keep the venue and this skatepark open. It featured big names like Beatsteaks Boysetsfire and many more.

The concrete under your feet is more than just a surface for tricks. It’s a testament to resilience. To years of music protests and skateboarding.
