Timeworn stones stand before you. This is Conjunto San Marcos. Its history is deeply rooted in the ancient settlement of Ixquitlán. Long before the Spanish arrived this was a place of toasted corn and perhaps a sacred space dedicated to the pulque god. The original church dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries. A major reconstruction in the late 1970s dramatically changed its appearance. Two new towers and a striking façade were added. The bells also date from that time. The chapel is larger now. The original tower however remains a testament to the past.

Notice the rectangular atrium surrounding the chapel. The façade although a product of the 20th century respects colonial styles. See the semicircular arch of the main entrance? It’s framed by beautifully carved stone pilasters. A cross-shaped window sits above it all. Exquisite quarry stone surrounds the window and the clock added during the remodel.

Inside the chapel is a single nave. Look up. Admire the extensive plasterwork decorating the ceilings. The triumphal arch features angelic wall paintings. The altar itself is simple. Yet you’ll find important images there. San Marcos the Immaculate Conception and the Crucified Christ are depicted.

Tragedy struck Conjunto San Marcos in 2017. The devastating earthquakes caused severe damage. The bell tower completely collapsed. It was entirely rebuilt in 1775 and renovated in 1974. Now plans are underway for its full restoration. A significant lion sculpture associated with Saint Mark is currently undergoing restoration. The neighborhood itself is worth exploring. Its crooked streets reflect a time before modern city planning. In 1936 it was even recognized as the cleanest neighborhood in Xochimilco.

The story of Conjunto San Marcos is a blend of ancient traditions and modern challenges. It’s a place where history whispers secrets from the past and where the spirit of community endures. Take a moment to reflect on this rich heritage. Let the stones speak to you.
