Once upon a time there was a farm. The Strevens family farm to be precise. It occupied much of what is now Conifer Grove. This wasn’t just any farm. It was the heart of Conifer Grove before it became the thriving suburb we see today.

Conifer Grove is an upper-middle class Auckland suburb. It sits on the eastern shores of Pahurehure Inlet part of the Manukau Harbour. The Auckland Council oversees it. It’s on the western edge of Takanini in the Manurewa-Papakura ward. Established in 1974 it replaced the Strevens family farm.

The name Conifer Grove itself is a nod to the area’s environmental focus. About one-fifth of the land was set aside as nature reserves. Clever planning for a growing community don’t you think? This dedication to nature continues today. Conifer Grove boasts tree-lined streets and stunning bay views. Before 2018 it also bordered the Manukau Golf Course. Now that area is the Waiata Shores subdivision developed by Fletcher Living.

Imagine the transformation. From a family farm to a planned upscale environmental subdivision. Fraser Thomas designed and built this new Conifer Grove. They even won awards for their work. The design is unique. Most streets are cul-de-sacs. Until 2021 there was only one way in and out of the newer sections. Brylee Drive’s connection to Gosper Road changed that.

Conifer Grove has a rich history beyond its transformation. The Conifer Grove School opened in 1981. The shopping centre followed in 1985. St Aidan’s Presbyterian Church joined the community in 1989. It’s a testament to the growth and development of the area. A small shopping centre serves the older part. Waiata Shores now has a Countdown supermarket promising more retail in the future. The community enjoys parks reserves and a boardwalk that winds along the water’s edge.

Conifer Grove continues to evolve. It’s a place that blends its agricultural past with its modern-day appeal. It’s a community that values both nature and progress. It’s more than just a suburb. It’s a story of transformation a testament to thoughtful planning and a vibrant community. And that my friends is the story of Conifer Grove.
