Did the blizzard of 1861 stop the founding of the Congregational Church of Jefferson Park? Absolutely not. On April 18, amidst the swirling snow, this beacon of faith took root. The Congregational Church of Jefferson Park, a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the unwavering dedication to faith, was officially organized. Just picture those determined souls, braving the elements to establish what would become a cornerstone of the Jefferson Park community. Initially, the church was a modest frame structure. Thanks to the generosity of David and Hannah Roberts, who donated both land and funds, it rose proudly on Plank Road, a short distance north of Roberts Court, now known as Giddings Street. This first building served the growing congregation faithfully until 1896. Then, with continued support from the Roberts family, a larger edifice was constructed just half a block west on Giddings Street. But the story doesn’t end there. In 1929, a third structure, the splendid colonial brick building you see before you today, replaced the second church. Interestingly, the previous church building didn’t simply disappear. It was purchased, moved across the C&NW tracks to the corner of Laramie and Gunnison, and continued its service as a church until the construction of the Kennedy Expressway necessitated its demolition. The Congregational Church of Jefferson Park wasn’t just a place of worship; it played a vital role in the community’s growth. Charles E. Farnsworth, the Sunday School Superintendent, established numerous Sunday School branches in and around Jefferson Park. Some of these branches blossomed into independent churches, including Forest Glen, Dunning (now Watson Park), Portage Park, Mayfair, and Trinity. The church’s name, as you see it inscribed above the entrance, reflects a slight change made in 1940. Originally known as the Jefferson Park Congregational Church, it was then officially renamed the Congregational Church of Jefferson Park. The church also boasts a connection to the United Church of Christ, a denomination renowned for its diversity and commitment to social justice. Founded in 1957, the UCC embraces a wide spectrum of traditions, including Congregational, German Evangelical and Reformed, and Christian congregations. As you stand before the Congregational Church of Jefferson Park, take a moment to appreciate its rich history. Imagine the generations that have sought solace and inspiration within its walls, and remember the blizzard that couldn’t stop its founding. This church is a living testament to the power of faith, community, and the enduring generosity of the Roberts family.
