The oldest synagogue building in Texas stands right in front of you. It was called B’nai Abraham and was built in 1892 in Brenham, Texas. It was the spiritual center of that town for Jewish families before it was moved to Austin. For decades, it was a vibrant center of Jewish life. The synagogue building had to move to Austin, because the Jewish community in Brenham had shrunk over time. Leon Toubin, a Brenham native, and his wife Mimi worked hard to maintain the historic building. They wanted to use the synagogue to build a Jewish future, even though the Jewish population in Brenham had grown smaller. They made a daring plan to move it to Austin, where the Modern Orthodox congregation needed a building. The building, with its history reaching back to1892, made its way to Austin in 2015. It got a new home on the Dell Jewish Community Center campus. The building was renovated for Congregation Tiferet Israel. Today, Congregation Tiferet Israel continues to keep B’nai Abraham’s legacy alive. It is a lively place for the Jewish community in Austin. Today, it continues to serve Austin’s Jewish community.
