Established in 1914, Congregation Ezra Bessaroth stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Sephardic Jewish community in Seattle. Here, at 5412 Wilson Avenue South in the Seward Park neighborhood, the unique traditions of Rhodes find a vibrant home. Congregation Ezra Bessaroth isn’t just a synagogue. It is a living link to the Mediterranean Island of Rhodes. The congregation meticulously preserves the distinct liturgical practices and customs of their ancestral home. This makes Congregation Ezra Bessaroth one of only two Sephardic congregations in Seattle. The other is Sephardic Bikur Holim Congregation. The story of Congregation Ezra Bessaroth began with Nessim Alhadeff’s arrival in Seattle from Rhodes in 1904. Within a few years, his brothers and many others from the island followed, drawn by the promise of a new life. By 1909, the seeds of a formal community were sown with the establishment of the Koupa Ozer Dalim Anshe Rhodes. This translates to “the fund for the aid of the poor, people of Rhodes.” This early organization, led by Haim DeLeon, reflects the community’s deep commitment to mutual support and social responsibility. Congregation Ezra Bessaroth’s current building, completed in 1958, stands as a symbol of the community’s growth and resilience. The congregation has thrived for over a century. It continues to play a vital role in Jewish life in Seattle. Daily minyanim, weekly Shabbat services, and the annual bazaar are just some of the ways Congregation Ezra Bessaroth fosters a strong sense of community and connection. Currently, Rabbi David Benchlouch leads the congregation. An expert in the minhag of Rhodes, he brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to his role. He joined Ezra Bessaroth in July 2022, following his service as the Rabbi of the Sephardi Hebrew Congregation of Cape Town in South Africa. This connection highlights the global network of Sephardic communities that share a common heritage and commitment to preserving their traditions. Congregation Ezra Bessaroth stands as a beacon of Sephardic culture and heritage. It offers a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Jewish traditions from the Island of Rhodes. It’s a place where history comes alive, where ancient customs are celebrated, and where the spirit of community thrives.
