Stepping onto the hallowed grounds of Congregation Beth Israel, it’s hard not to feel a powerful sense of history. This vibrant congregation, built on a foundation of community and faith, has stood as a beacon of Jewish life in Chicago for over a century. Founded in 1917 by a group of families seeking a place to practice their faith in the burgeoning northwest side of the city, Beth Israel quickly grew, eventually becoming one of the largest Jewish congregations in the city. The story of Congregation Beth Israel is one of resilience, of adapting to changing times, and of preserving Jewish tradition while embracing progress and innovation.

The original plans for the synagogue were modest. A dry goods merchant on Lawrence Avenue, Mr. Novak, and Mr. Tannenbaum, a deli owner, joined forces to rent a hall for High Holiday services. The first services took place in Kimball Hall, a modest space that became a foundation for what would become a thriving community. In those early years, Beth Israel found a home in a series of rented spaces, each one reflecting the congregation’s growing membership and influence within the community.

The congregation finally purchased land on Bernard and Ainslie Streets in 1919, a landmark moment that solidified the congregation’s commitment to their community. The first phase of their building project, a Community Hall cornerstone was laid in 1922. The building was dedicated in 1923. This impressive edifice became a central hub of Jewish life for the neighborhood, hosting a variety of social gatherings, religious services, and educational programs.

In 1949, a second story Sanctuary was added to the building, a testament to the congregation’s ongoing expansion and commitment to their goals. This sanctuary, which remains in use today, is a beautiful space that evokes a sense of peace and reverence. It’s a space filled with the memories of generations of worshippers who have sought solace and inspiration within its walls. From its humble beginnings in a rented hall to its current home in Skokie, Congregation Beth Israel has witnessed and shaped the history of Chicago’s Jewish community. You can still feel the echoes of its rich history in the reverence of its services, the warmth of its community and its steadfast commitment to a future filled with hope and Jewish values.
