Imagine La Boca in the late 19th century. Thousands of Italian immigrants mostly from Liguria poured into the area. They sought a new life but found cramped unsanitary conditions. In 1858 a small wooden chapel dedicated to Santa Lucia was built on Calle Montes de Oca. It was a humble beginning. A far cry from the magnificent structure we see before us today.
The first stone of what would become Congregación San Juan Evangelista was laid decades later in 1883. This wasn’t without its challenges. A yellow fever epidemic in 1871 and a shortage of funds nearly derailed the project. But the community persevered. Prominent Argentinians like ex-president Bartolomé Mitre and then-president Domingo Faustino Sarmiento lent their support. The Salesians took on the management of the parish in 1872. They played a key role in the construction. Their dedication transformed the dream of a church into reality.
On July 17 1886 the church was inaugurated. President Julio Argentino Roca himself attended the ceremony. The building boasts a Latin cross plan and a stunning cupola.
