From the gentle slopes of the Aubette Valley, Condécourt emerges. It’s a quiet village nestled in the Île-de-France region. Condécourt holds a unique charm, blending rural tranquility with historical significance. Condécourt isn’t just a picturesque village. It’s a place steeped in history. It sits within the perimeter of the Vexin Français Regional Natural Park. This park is known for its rolling hills, dense forests, and rich biodiversity.

Condécourt’s history dates back to the Gallic period. It is a testament to the enduring legacy of French heritage. The village is home to two remarkable historical monuments. The Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens Church showcases a captivating blend of architectural styles. Its oldest sections, the base of the bell tower and its ribbed vault, date back to the late 11th century. These Romanesque elements are hidden within later additions. The first floor of the octagonal bell tower also exhibits early Romanesque features. It likely originates from the early 12th century. A simpler second floor was added during the Gothic period. The church features a rustic nave from the 18th century. It has a Gothic choir from the second quarter of the 13th century. The chapel north of the bell tower contains a unique three-branched rib vault.

The Château de Villette, located in the hamlet of the same name, is another historical gem. Classified as a historical monument in 1942, the château underwent renovations in the late 2010s. Its park is listed in the General Inventory of Cultural Heritage. The château also boasts a rich cinematic history, having been featured in films such as “Pièce Montée” and “The Da Vinci Code”. Condécourt has also been home to several notable figures. The physician, physiologist, and philosopher Georges Cabanis, along with his wife Charlotte-Félicité de Grouchy, resided at the Château de Villette. Aimée de Coigny, the muse of André Chénier, also graced the château with her presence. The mathematician and politician Nicolas de Condorcet and his wife Sophie Marie Louise de Grouchy also called Villette home. Finally, the French general of the Revolution and the Empire, Emmanuel de Grouchy, lived at the château as well.

Condécourt offers more than just grand monuments. The village features charming lavoirs, or wash houses. The covered lavoir on Boulevard du Nord has an open-air basin. The area designated for the washerwomen has a sheltered space, complete with walls on three sides and a shed roof. Another lavoir in Villette hamlet was once covered and quite spacious. It was fed by a spring flowing under a small arch in a side wall. Condécourt, with its tranquil setting and historical richness, invites you to step back in time. As you explore its streets, imagine the lives of those who once walked these same paths. From its ancient origins to its cinematic appearances, Condécourt offers a tapestry of stories waiting to be uncovered.
