Why were there no new gates built at Chicago O’Hare International Airport for 25 years? That was the question on everyone’s mind until 2018. The answer arrived in the form of the Concourse L Stinger, a brand-new addition to Terminal 3. This wasn’t just a minor update. The Concourse L Stinger represented the first expansion of gate capacity at O’Hare in over two decades. American Airlines, the driving force behind this project, invested a hefty $70 million to make it happen. It was a necessary move, given the fierce competition for gate space at one of the world’s busiest airports. The Concourse L Stinger added five new gates to American Airlines’ roster, bringing their total at O’Hare to an impressive 71. But these weren’t your average gates, designed for massive jets. They were specifically tailored for regional aircraft, a strategic decision to maximize efficiency. This meant that the usually cramped gates of Concourses H and K, previously home to some regional jets, could be freed up for larger aircraft. The Concourse L Stinger, while a welcome addition, is a bit of a hike from the main security area in Terminal 3. You won’t find moving walkways along this narrow corridor, just a straight shot to your gate.
