The Comunidade Santa Terezinha do Menino Jesus isn’t just a church it’s a testament to devotion. It’s a place deeply connected to the story of Saint Therese of Lisieux. Her relics have visited this area three times. This community cherishes the legacy of this “greatest saint of modern times” as Pope Pius X declared.
The Basilica of Santa Teresinha in Tijuca a prominent church dedicated to Saint Therese received pontifical recognition shortly after her canonization in 1927. This isn’t the only church in Rio dedicated to Saint Therese. Another church in Botafogo dates back to 1938. Its location was chosen by Saint Therese’s sister in France. The sister’s decision came after the then Cardinal Sebastiao Leme had recovered from a serious illness. He promised to build a church to Saint Therese as a thank you. Two more parishes dedicated to Saint Therese followed one in Santa Cruz in 1996 and another in Campo Grande in 1999.
These churches aren’t just buildings they are spiritual anchors for the community. They are places of solace prayer and reflection. They stand as a living testament to the enduring faith of Rio’s people. The relics’ journeys through Rio showcased the city’s deep-rooted devotion to Saint Therese. The relics’ presence drew many to seek her intercession.
During the relics’ 2023 visit they traveled from the Diocesan Seminary of Niterói by boat. They were blessed at the General Command of the Naval Fuzileiros. They then made their way to the Basilica of Santa Teresinha. A mass was also held at the Cristo Redentor sanctuary. The journey continued to other churches in the archdiocese. The relics visited the Monastery of Santa Teresa. They were taken to churches in Jacarepaguá Campo Grande and Botafogo. Finally the relics visited the Cathedral of São Sebastião before moving to Petrópolis.
