Wondering what makes this church so special? Comunidade Católica Nossa Senhora da Divina Providência stands as a beacon of faith. It offers a unique blend of history and community spirit.

Let’s step back to the early 20th century. The story of Comunidade Católica Nossa Senhora da Divina Providência begins with the Orionite priests. They arrived in Rio de Janeiro with a mission. Initially, they worked at the Instituto de Preservação do Rio. This institute cared for orphans.

Dom Orione felt restricted in educating the boys freely. He urged Pe. Angelo de Paoli to acquire property for the congregation. Dom Sebastião Leme, the Archbishop, suggested a location in the Gávea neighborhood. It is now known as Jardim Botânico.

In 1924, a plot of land with a small house was purchased. It was located on Rua Lopes Quintas. This house became Casa da Divina Providência. It served as the official headquarters. It represented the Congregação da Pequena Obra da Divina Providência in Brazil. Pe. Angelo de Paoli was the Director.

Construction of the Instituto Profissional da Pequena Obra began in October 1924. The Oratório Pio X was already active. Clérigo Arlotti taught catechism. The first chapel started construction in 1924. Dom Sebastião Leme visited and blessed the new chapel in June 1925.

The Instituto officially opened in March 1926. It welcomed its first six orphans. A primary school also began with 30 external students. By 1931, the chapel played a significant role. It administered over 21000 communions. It prepared 83 children for their First Eucharist. Catechism classes had 200 students. The Apostolate of Prayer included 150 members.

Dom Orione revisited Brazil in 1937. He blessed the Instituto’s chapel. It was named Capela Nossa Senhora da Divina Providência.

The Província Nossa Senhora da Fátima was established in 1958. It included all the Congregation’s houses in Brazil. The official celebration took place at the Instituto da Divina Providência. Cardinal Dom Jaime de Barros Câmara and other authorities attended. During this time, the first six Brazilian Orionite priests were ordained.

The province celebrated 50 years of Orionite presence in Brazil in 1963. Pe. Antonio Pagliaro became the first Brazilian Provincial in 1964.

The chapel’s work with the local community grew. The Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro authorized the creation of the Paróquia Nossa Senhora da Divina Providência. It was officially consecrated on January 1, 1970.

Dom Jaime de Barros Câmara signed the decree. It established the Paróquia Nossa Senhora da Divina Providência do Jardim Botânico on November 18, 1969. The Parish covers an area. About 40% is forest reserve. Around 1500 people reside there.

The official inauguration took place. It was on January 1, 1970. Dom José de Castro Pinto presided over the ceremony. He represented Cardinal Dom Jaime de Barros Câmara. Pe. Antônio Pagliaro, Pe. Genésio Poli and Pe. Cesare Lelli also attended.

Pe. Antonio Lemos became the first pároco. He took office during this first mass.

Today, Comunidade Católica Nossa Senhora da Divina Providência continues its mission. It serves as a place of worship and community engagement. Regular masses occur throughout the week. The church remains committed to inclusivity. It fosters a warm and welcoming atmosphere for all.
